In your own words: If there was a formula to crafting a hit song, surely many more of them would have been written throughout the history of popular music. Not quite as many, I suspect, by Sting. True, he has had more than his share of chart success, but what has always drawn me to him has been his willingness to defy convention & follow his own muse. While in concert, you are sure to see him perform selections from his ample arsenal of hits, on record, especially in recent years, his work seems to have matured into a different direction that devoted listeners can continue to appreciate, as we have always understood & respected the care & craftsmanship involved, whether the end result has been a lute album, orchestral interpretations of his hits, meditations on winter or the music to a Broadway production. As we're about to hear new music from him that sees a return to his "rock roots," I hope that that is merely a blip on the radar in his continued progression as an artist in the years ahead.
